No stoping me now :D
Here are the two smaller Beech pieces that was the first slice off the trunk.
Decided to d them both natural edge,as the bark was still well stuck :D
Both were held on a faceplate while the recess was cut for reversing.
Again they have been left chunky and finished with food safe oil.

This one is 12" dia x 3" deep.

Comments welcome :D

Looks like the forced rest earlier in the year did your turning skills good Paul, both very acceptable pieces.

I like these a lot.

Have they dried to an oval is it an optical illusion because of the edge?

When you turn these you are turning into the side of a log and they come out oval in shape.

Done a good job getting it that thin and keeping the bark Paul, must have been taking fine cuts at the end.

Sorry Oakbear i seemed to have missed you question  .
But no the pieces are still round as they were when i cut em on the bandsaw as you can see in the piccy. The two smaller ones.
It is an illusion :D
I used to think the same when i first saw natural edged turnings :?

The ones that I have turned are oval around the bark. The overall shape arounfd the maximum diameter is circular. Is there more than one way of doing these perhaps?

I have just measured one that I have done and it is definitely narrower across than it is long by about 1 1/2"/ . The curve on the width goes down the side of the log. It's probably me....I never could do things the same as everyone else

Pete

I think you will find it depends upon the original diameter of the log, the smaller the more ovoid the final piece. although at the lowest point of the bark edge the diameter will be constant (subject to nill shrinkage)

Looks like i owe you an appology Pete
Just measured those two pieces and they are different measurements across the grain and against the grain. :?
