Hi,

For some time I've been looking to pick a Record 778, and sell my Stanley 78 onto someone who will love it. Only problem is that they don't seem to turn up all that often, or I miss them.

So I was wondering what the panel think of the modern 778s that can be bought off the shelf when the need arises. There's Record of course, but also I think Footprint and Axminster's own brand.

Any comments or experience with these?

Thanks in advance,

The Record #778 is better than the Stanley #78 IMHO but, in my view, they are both a bit agricultural. Jacob seems to like the Stanley #78 however.

If you want a really good fenced rebate plane, save up and go for the Veritas skew rebate - head and shoulders above the #778 or #78. Review here https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/view ... kew+rebate

Cheers

That looks seriously impressive, a whole different class. Shame about the price tag though.

I brought a Rolson a couple of years ago, thats if price is a problem. I picked mine up for about £20. Done a search for it online, and it may seem that they stopped making & selling it in 07/08. But worth a search. I work in the trade and its great for everyday use.

Tony, don't forget the Woden W78 has twin fence rods - as does the WS one. Having said which, despite a wide range of rebate planes to chose from, I find I tend to turn to an old Marples single rod (essentially a 78 in another colour), so it's possible the hang up on the supposed improvements of a 778 over a 78 are really a bit of a waste of time. Whereas the benefits of a skew rebate over a regular is another kettle of poissons, especially cross grain. Keep your powder dry for the latter, imo. And don't dismiss the wooden variety of moving fillister either.

Cheers, Alf

I wish they'd bring out an O1 iron for it. The LH version would go straight to the top of my wishlist if they did.

Cheers, Vann.

Thanks everyone. I'll keep an eye out for a Woden (I already have a wooden skew rabate, but that needs some work).

At the moment its more of an impulse. When I use the 78 I always wish it was a bit better.
