as a chip designer, I`m getting more and more cheesed off with modern appliance tat.
My company goes out of its way to make bullet proof designs, shame everyone else in the world doesn't.

classic example, every bloomin' switch in the world now has a little micro computer inside to control it. e.g. your average cooker hood....... 3 speed control buttons from the extractor fan, bloody things crashes every week and the misses has to pull out the plug for a few minutes.

My telly (philips plasma) has a multi coloured LED on the front, green when on, red when on standby and orange when DEAD!. Needs turning off at the plug every month or so.

don't even get me started about cars.........
why have a computer control the rear wiper or even the tow bar lights.

whats the world come to?

THIS is why I love woodwork.

Well duh, Steve - it's called progress!! ;)

I`m all for progress, working in a techno field I see loads of "technology for the sake of technology", its just a shame when things don't work properly.

most of its down to the 5P`s P*ss Poor Planning make P*ss Poor Performance.
and bad implementation.

its a shame because it alienates people from progress.
its bad enough having to restart a windows PC every time you sneeze let alone the telly as well.

Progress is good, I agree, but there's a lot to be said for the KISS acronym...Keep It Simple Soldier. Generally I find that 'simple' is always good and works better than 'complicated'. As an example, I recently bought a new flat screen TV and DVD recorder, the 'book of words' for each is 6mm thick A4 so that's a half inch thick book :? to get to grips with...SWIMBO don't stand a chance - Rob

But But...........

Surely the woodwork tools advice on this forum suffer from the same "go faster" concepts.

LN, LV two cherries etc etc etc: sure they are lovely tools but how many times do I see people implying that if you don't have them you might as well give up. Buy the best (ie most expensive!).

I also fly fish and fancy tools there are sold as a solution for crap techniques in that pastime too.

I think blokes are worse than women for drooling over fancy wiz bang gadgets with functions you will never use.

I have a BIG problem building up:
For security reasons the places I work, ban cameras, which is fair enough.
I have a mobile phone for calls & text messaging; when the current mobile packs up what am I to do??
Coz all phones now have a camera in them. I'm going to be well & truely stuffed.

Bit of sticky tape over the lens?

Remember going into a company and having my floppy disks scanned.

"But we can't read them" they said after half an hours' fiddling around.

"Maybe that's because they are Mac disks" I said . "You can't read them and neither can your computers so you're not going to pick up any virus, are you?". Still made me leave them with reception.

The advice given on the forums about tools is more often that not to buy the best that can be afforded... with little care, tools in the LN and LV range are do-able for many people but there are loads of instances where adivice has been given on refurbing and fettling much older tools where a budget is clearly limited. I agree that buying gadgets that are useless is a bloke thing and I'll put my hand up to that one as well, although these days I tend to adopt a much more minimalist approach and only buy stuff when I need it for a certain job...except for planes  - Rob

Fortunately UK Nuclear security is slighty more robust than a bit of sticky tape.

..........But not much

CARS, CARS! Don't talk to me about cars. Mine has just failed it's test cause there is an ABS light on the dash that comes on when it feels like it and goes off when it does too! Nothing wrong with the brakes or the ABS and the same car with the same problem passed last year??? Heard it could be the CPU causing it megga bucks! Might just tamper with the light instead. Bloody electronics and cars, bring back the Triumph herald.

The Horse and cart seemed to work relatively trouble-free, save for an odd horse-shoe every once in a while and the occasional bag of oats.
Sadly, we've over-engineered and over-complicated ourselves into financial struggle and economic oblivion.

I hate my mobile phone, and the pressure it puts me under, I hate being a slave to a computer, I'm terrified of the unholy work of Bielzebub that is the Microwave oven, -- I'm 43 years old, and cant turn my own telly on of an evening, and have to get my son to do it.... such is its complexity.

What doesn't help is adverts like " Ashamed of your mobile " ?

NO !!! its a phone for goodness sake !

It does however, but pressure on people to keep up with trends and fashions, thus ensuring More money is wasted on replacing things that were perfectly serviceable in the first place, just because its no longer 'cool'.

One ***** of light is that I've heard recently that OPAL FRUITS are to return, and STARBURST are to be ditched !

I've bought some Midget Gems today. I'm surprised that they haven't had to be renamed something more Politically Correct. Suggestions, anyone? Winner receives a Midget Gem next time I meet them! :)

I have a desk lamp, monitor, keyboard and mouse and desk phone (that needs to be plugged in so that it works  )

Other items occasionally adorn the desk surface but are quickly placed back in a drawer.

I do like a clear desk when I can and try not to leave anything out on it over night. Much nicer to come back to in the morning.

I agree with this statement so why do I hanker after simpler times. I probably need to stop thinking, that should do it.

Speaking of progress has anyone noticed on the new, improved BBC website that you need to use a mouse to navigate now? No more using the TAB key to jump from area to area, link to link.... it doesn't highlight them anymore. Now take the engine that drives these very forums, you don't need a mouse to navigate etc. Ok, I can hear the question why would you want to. Well sometimes thet batteries in my mouse fail and sometimes I just want to sit back in my chair with my keyboard on my lap.

How many different languages though? But that's another debate.

Maybe there should be a specific board for fettling. I for one need a huge amount of education in this area. I sometimes feel if it isn't perfect out of the box then there is no hope. I need numbers and angles to the nth decimal point. Analogue vs Digital.

I don't let my email interrupt me or my phone if I am doing something that just needs to get done. I look at them when I want to and usually when I have time to deal with them there and then.

As for your TV, I think they do it inentionally just to try and make you feel helpless!

And finally....

I just realised, I've turned into a grumpy b*****d!

Cheers

The day I retired I turned off my phone and dumped my wrist watch.
Happy day!

Not so - my wife bought a Nokia that has no camera just a couple of weeks ago.

That make two of us Digit, I only know the time when the radio news comes on :D . I don't mind change, just get irritated when a component costing 5p fails and you have to throw away an item costing > £50 to replace :(

Monday University Challenge. Tuesday CSI. Wednesday weekly shop. Thursday Question time. Friday read a book. Saturday CSI.
Sad isn't it?

Roy.
