Finally started making a mirror frame with a Japanese style joint on the corners.

It's going to be 4ft x 5ft and made of Cherry and 30mm x 100mm material dim's.

It was planned up to size a few weeks back, you don't need to see pics of that, but here's what I did today.

1st cut the height of the square after having made all the layout lines.

Then mitred them very close to the final line, which will be tuned for snug fit.

Easier to see the mortise layout lines here

I don't have a mortiser or Pillar drill yet so used a router in a table to cut some of the mortiise as deep as possible.

Then cut the rest of the mortise by hand.

Will use a router to rough out the cheeks of the tenons to get a snug fit then trim by hand and then back to the saw for the mitres, that will be tommorow's job. The square part will have a Rosewood peg inserted and I think I'll put a domino in the mitre to keep it tight and help with the alignment.

Thanks for looking

Looks good so far.

Just wondering how you are going to get the domino in the mitre as there doesnt look like there is enough room to get the machine in.

Interesting joint selection. Your cherry looks good, too. Very clean and I can't see any dead knots. :)

Only had a few Hrs this afternoon to work but managed to get it together

Finally try all together!

One joint is a little open, but will slip in a piece of veneer

Other than that quite pleased and next process will be glue up then rebate the back for the mirror to fit in, chamfer the egdges from back to face, make pegs and holes for them, but not this weekend.......

Glued up the Frame this morning, was not as bad as I thought, though did not have clamps long enough so a little impro was required. Joints all ok bar one which had said veneer inserted and it'll never be noticed!

Made the Rosewood Pegs from a few offcuts, making them 6.5mm square on the shooting board.

Drilled a hole on an offcut of the Cherry then squared with 1/4" chisel, would liked to have used an old mortice bit but dont have one, any other methods for this let me know? Test the pegs for fit, seems ok, will put a slight taper on them.

Will chamfer the back and make the rebate for the mirror to fit in tomorrow, drill the Frame for the pegs then sand and finish.

Don't forget it would look rather good if the tops of the pegs weren't planed flush but chiseled to a pyramid shape and were left proud of the cherry surface - Rob

Domed would look good if the pins were round...these though are square so pyramidal would be more appropriate IMO- Rob

Drilled holes for pegs

Made the holes square on a 45 degree angle to the corner and checked the peg fit.

Routed out the back and chamfered the sides at 30 degrees with a bearing guided bit.

Sanded and put 1st coat of Osmo on

Tried both versions of the pegs and decided that flush looked the best, a few more coats of the osmo, attach hanging brackets, bevelled mirror with hardboard backing and on the wall she'll go.

Thank you, I'll take a pic when hung without the mirror as it's difficult to photograph when in......

That's a really nice piece Bloonose. Nice alternative to a straight mitre.

Cheers
