Not technically buying advice but it might save people a few pounds in buying materials?
Purely by accident, I passed a high end interior designer and supplier (Bowman & Bennett) at the Mitchell Centre in Sutton Coldfield and the proprietor was leaving old sample books / swatches outside for anyone to collect. As this seemed to be too good to be true I had a word and he explained that his suppliers simply had updated their catalogues and so the samples were in perfect condition and if I could use them then I could take as many as I wanted. He was giving them away as this was easier than disposing himself.
So I now have a huge supply of small pieces of quality fabric, wallpaper etc which I can use in my woodworking, my wife in her card making and crafting and the grandkids wwith theeir crafting and school work.
So if you have any similar suppliers near you it might be worth having a word to see if you can get your hands on old sample books when they become out of date?
