Meddings Floor standing Pillar drill refurb and rebuild.

Sorry no pictures of when it arrived looking rather sorry for itself and showing it's age, been standing unused for a while, no not me, the drill.
Here is a few after a quick clean (yes it was worse than pictured) and a bit of dismantling.

New bearings for the geabox, popped the seals off the bearings as the gearbox is oil filled. Strange mix of metric and imperial bearings.

Completed gearbox rebuilt. Not sure about the gearchange shaft being oil tight, Meddings parts list states it as '13" of high pressure twist' Not being able to track such things down I have cut a couple of rubber seals from a flat sheet, time will tell how successful this will be.

One of the stops for the gearchange lever was missing. So a replacement one was made from a bolt.

Annealed the end of the spring as it had broken, bent a 90 degree on it to fit into the slot for the quill shaft.

Had trouble with the domed nut that holds the spring casing on, threads were just too worn to hold. Drilled and tapped the quill shaft and popped a hole into the nut. Its not particularly elegant but it works.

Also the small strip of sprung metal that latches onto the pin was corroded, repurposed a hacksaw blade.

Fits perfectly :D For some reason the spring cover didn't get painted, no I meant it to be bare metal, honest.

Just a question on the 'boiler plate' badge. How do you remove and attach those? Was it riveted on? I have a similar badge to remove and attach on my Whitehead bandsaw.

Quill handle goes on with a taper key.

Course couldn't resist trying it out. Bit of an oil leak is an understatement. So gearbox out again..

Obvious culprit was the output shaft oil seal, Remove lipped seal and measured shaft at 24.3mm so the 25mm seal that was there and I replaced like for like would explain the leak.

Stuff something in the housing while you clean off the old sealant (that is not that old its only been in there a week!)

Pop out the old seal, an appropriate sized socket makes an ideal drift. Then replace, this time with a 24mm seal. Note to self next time measure the shaft before ordering oil seals.

And replace with a bit more silicon gasket, neater job this time.

Replace gearbox, extend the quill before fitting gearbox in.

Then retract quill before tightening the bolts that hold gearbox in place. Fit the pulley to the gearbox and line up pulleys, I was taught as an apprentice to use a piece of string. Fit new belt and grease nipples.

Had real problems with getting enough movement on the gear selector, too much play in the pin and not enough room before the lever hits the housing, in the end marked position of lever and had to drill out the pin that holds the lever to gearshaft and fit a bolt in there.

TA DAHH, and in position. Not fixed down yet but may well end up some where else so no drilling holes in the floor yet. Unfortunately the chuck is not central on its MT3 taper, tempted to give it a whack with a rubber mallet, shall have to investigate if there is a more technical way to straighten it. Now where in the chaos did the chuck key go?

did you replace the bearings? I am really struggling to get the new ones on my drill now.
 
Looks fantastic and I'm very jealous! I'd have loved a good used Meddings in my workshop, but I hunted for over a year without success, so caved and bought an Axminster Engineering pillar drill. It's a nice machine...but it'll never be a Meddings!

Actually a whack with a rubber mallet in the right direction is the technical way to do it. But it may be worth checking on the spindle first. If you put a dial gauge on the inside of the taper, is that running true? If not, the spindle needs straightening and had best come out again before attempting that. I would do that between V blocks on a surface plate, then you can measure the direction of the whack.

HI,

I'm just repairing one of these at the minute, and struggling to get the lid off the gearbox - don't need to take the whole gearbox out, just the lid so I can replace the Tufnol back gear.

I've taken out all of the bolts, and given it a tap with a mallet to loosen the gasket sealant, but can't then get the lid off the gearbox housing. Is there a particular way to do it?
