The lad and his girlfriend have bought their first house - a full on fixer upper.
In amongst the blown plaster and damp there are some nice bits of panelling, which I think is pine, although very clear of knots.

They'd like a dresser in matching wood. Will clear pine do it or is there a better timber (it won't be painted)?
And of the various "antique pine" stains and finishes, which ones look ok and less like something Trump spilled his fake tan over?

I think it is best to identify the panelling first. Can you get some photos. If it is pine and knot free it is most likely to be Pitch Pine which would look great cleaned up and waxed.

Thanks - I'll try to get some photos. Is pitch pine still available or what's the closest alternative?

Reclamation yard, old pitch pine church pews. Loads available, timber is amazing quality. Can even try gumtree for people selling contents of churches to be renovated for better price. Yes pitch pine is still available, it was usually the name given to southern yellow pine from the states. It's pretty hard, and very heavy for a softwood, quartered stuff is very stable and the best part of buying reclaimed timer is it's dry and done with most of its movement so more stable.
