Hi all,

Here's one for you to scratch your heads over...

I'm making a toy box for my nephew, no problems there, simple MDF jobbie with a spray finish. Then the problem.... my brother-in-law would like the lads name writting on in some way :-k

Inspired by an episode of "Pimp My Ride" (just happened to catch it, honest!!) I saw a guy do a fantastic spray job on a car with clever masking so I figured, if I print off some letters or similar off the PC and stick them down I can simply spray over and peel off, et Viola!!

So what do I print it on to and how do I stick it down? I guess it needs to be sticky enough to stay in place but no so sticky I can't get it off... :-k :-k

Ideas please!!!!

Cheers,

Richard

Do a Google for Artists Masking Film.

Make sure that any you get is safe to use with proposed paint.

Years ago used to make my own with heavy tracing paper & goldsize.

Another possibility - again requiring a test first is the self adhesive label sheet that you can print on.
The secret to crisp lettering will be cutting with a scalpel and making sure the edges are sealed down before spraying.
Once you have peeled off the stencils coat with lacquer all over to maximuse the life of the lettering.

I go to my local sign writer with the design and he just prints it off in low tack plastic, fairly cheap but then he's a mate so don't know the real price

The stuff your looking for is called velum, run it thru a printer same as paper.Prints whatever you want off of your computer, peels away leaveing a sticky back stencil.

Cheers guys,

As usual, it's all about knowing what products are out there. I have ordered some so we'll see what happens. I will post up some pictures or maybe even a WIP if I get a chance.

Thanks again,

Richard

PS Happy New Year!!!!

Forgive me - are you sure about the spelling as this seems to be animal skins or biological stuff! If you have a link etc it would be helpful :)

Thanks

Miles,
You need to look at were Grinding One lives, he is a cross the pond, so finding the same thing over here may well be a challenge.
I know velum as animal skins used as writing material.

There is also the idea of printing on normal paper using a laser printer and then using your normal finish embed the paper, which will go translucent, in the finish itself. You probably need a thin absorbent paper like cheap photocopy stuff. If you print inside an oval you can cut round it easily. Of course you need to do a few tests .

Sorry to not have seen your reply sooner, but thats what we call it here .Its a foggy looking plastic sold at Big Box stores here that sell computer stuff and papers.Comes in 100 sheet to a box,and its used in the printer to make stencils...If you need some I could pop some in the post for you to try? Here it sells for 75 cents a sheet 8 inches X 11 inches.
Oh and if its made out of animals?Maybe the glue is but the plastic??
When you peel the plastic from the backing plastic the printed side is the side you use ,the duller side of the Velum is the printed side...I hope that make sense

Just tryin to keep up in the world with whats happening....I`m retired so I get on whenever my body does not want to sleep anymore(old folks)
Check the nursing homes, old people up all of the time....
Of course I`ll be back to work in the spring to delivering flowers with a truck.
Not much of that business going on right now.
