We found at work that Makita 12 volt NiCd and NiMH batteries will fit and work with the 14.4 volt drills, impact drivers and the like. The 12 volt batteries are the same width but just a bit shorter front to back than the 14.4 volt ones (two less cells I'm told). The Makita 18 volt batteries are wider than the 14.4 volt ones but share the same charger so an 18 volt NiCd/NiMH tool will run on a 14.4 volt battery so long as you held the battery pack in place with the old standby - a bit of black gaffer tape. That's because the 18 volt battery packs are wider and Makitas don't have spring clip contacts like deWalts.

Incidentally, you can also use deWalt 12 volt NiCd and NiMH batteries in their 18 volt tools, although getting the batteries back out again takes a screwdriver
