Not tried myself, but at one time was looking into scrollwork clocks

MY wife already has the Serpentine clock from the last of those three links on her wishlist 
This started as my wife hearing about steampunk jewellery and wanting to try and make some. Which led to her ordering some cogs and gears from broken watches to make jewellery with. Which led to discussions about watch and clock making. Whic led to buying a book on the subject. Which led to discussions about how we do not have the facilities to make metal cogs but whether you could make the parts out of wood. Which led to wooden clock plans
I was also looking at the steampunk laptop (a wonderful refit in wood and brass of his laptop). As my thing is making boxes I may have to make a steampunk inspired box with the lid inlaid with gears.
