As said hard wax oil would not be a bad choice but I guess it all depends on the look you are aiming for. There is a huge choice around now and it is a bit daunting making a choice. I like to keep it simple and the good part of oil finishes are how easy they are to maintain down the track.

Bookcases & wall units i made a few years ago were finished in ronseal satin polyurethane varnish, It was easy to get an excellent finish in 3 to 4 coats & is extemely hard wearing. Note this is the high voc version not the waterbased rubbish that doesnt last five minutes.
