Well I have been back on the cutlery canteen project again this week and have managed to start fitting the drawers:

You will notice one is missing and the reson for this is that it turned out twisted?

I have re-glued it and clamped it and have my fingers crossed.
I also got most of the top built and this now has the false drawer front in glue too.

If all goes well I hope to finish fitting the last drawer and the top and then move onto the inside for the cutlery trays. Fingers crossed. :D

Hi Waka and thanks. I have used a rebated joint at the rear of the drawers as the back panel is very thin stock. This will be reinforced with doublers which will also act as the housings for the cutlery.

Well still hard at work on the canteen. Seems like there is more work on one of these minatures than the full size thing! Anyway I have applied the finish finally which is three coats of Danish oil and one of wax:

I also started turning up some knobs for the drawers as the customer said she would like wooden ones:

I did intend to also make these out of the Oak but found it to be too course grained for turning such fine objects so used some old Beech I had and will colour it to match. Three made and only seven more to go! I am quite rusty at turning as it has been some time since I did any so excuse the state of the knobs. Almost there now then I will try my hand at flocking the inside, should be a laugh. :?

Alan - Pine drawer sides?...surprised you didn't use some of that very nice oak for them. I've made drawers in the past with pine sides (nothing wrong with that) and to counteract the high wear rate, I just glued on a bit of something harder to the lower half of the drawer side and then made the runner out of the same stuff - Rob

Very nice, I do like the Danish Oil finish. :)

Nice to see someone ask for wooden knobs as well. I don't know why but, we don't often see enough of that with projects in this forum?

Well Rob I was trying to keep the weight down a bit as it is heavy. There is another reason too and that is I was running short of the Oak. It is some I have had stored for a while. I have added some lipping to the bottom of the pine in Oak to relieve the wear a little. I agree OPJ that I was surprised by the wooden knobs. My customer loves the look and feel of wood so went for the wood fittings, although I am pretty rusty with my lathe work, still practice makes perfect. Must sharpen those chisels though.

Here are a couple of pictures of the canteen now it has the knobs on.

I also added SWMBO for scale in this one just to show it isn't a full size piece. :D

All that remains now is to flock the inside and then fit the stays for the lid. I should get on with that on Sunday as I have another job tomorrow.
