Hi

My Black and Decker mains drill has started making an odd noise, and an odder smell. It's been diagnosed for me as worn brushes (I'm surprised the thing has lasted as long as it has).

Anywho, I'm currently looking for some replacement brushes, but how can I tell if the armature is worn/damaged? I've looked at it, but I've no idea if it looks how it should? There's still some brush left, but not much.

I know I could buy a £40 replacement, but would rather fix something than chuck it away (if repairable).

Thanks

Especially as new brushes are about £5. Go for it.
I doubt the armature will be damaged if there's still some carbon left on the brushes. Have a look at the armature for any tell-tale signs of stress damage (hairline cracks/hot spots). Compare the armature to that pictured in a diagram or a picture of one (using google image search) and see if it's not bent.

Let us know what the year/model number is of your drill in case someone here has one and can share info/images.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I've just ordered some brushes, hopefully that'll do the trick. The cost of a replacement armature is 2/3 the price of a new drill (!), so will see if the brushes sort it.

Cheers
