Hello everyone, been too busy to get on the lathe for a couple of weeks  but got a bit of a go this afternoon 8) I thought I'd go for something simple to get 'my eye' back in,so I made this platter from a bit of old Mahogany worktop. The idea for rim decoration is the 'cosmos' Its 11" wide, coloured with acrylics and laquer finish.

i love it JT, when i look at the second photo for a while i kind of get a planet surrounded by stars scenario, at it almost looks 3D to me.
Great platter, nice colours, another belter.

Like to see a wall plaque along similar vein with the central sphere domed (or dished) to produce the 'planet' effect.
Can envision the quest for the Jupiter red whirl popping out of the grain patterns.

Another lovely piece from your workshop Johnny. I am not too sure if I admire your skill or your designing the most. Very effective and well done

Very Very nice indeed.

Give us more info on the rim ? - Is it coloured black then flicked/dripped/blown with another lighter paint ? if it is - how does it then look so smooth and not layered ?

Nice erm "Base"

Super platter. I love the contrast between the cosmos deisgn on the rim and the colour of the mahogany. A very nice piece of work.

Thanks for all the positive replies 8) much appreciated.

Loz, the rim was painted first, then the silver paint dabbed on very sparingly and then clear laquer over the top of that.

Hi Johnny,

Sorry, got to this one late.

I think this is another winner, I think the mix of natural wood and colouring works well, and I can certainly see the cosmos in the rim.
