Picked up a couple of these 11W flourescents from IKEA for about £11 each last week. The table clamp and swivel makes it easy to use for either machines or workbench and it warms up in a couple of minutes into a bright white light.

I got a planned trip to Ikea in two weeks time, so could you tell me how it is secured to the table as I want to share it with the drill press and bandsaw?

They look good Brian - you can never have enough light, especially at my age?

Pity they are from Ikea - I hate the place. Get dragged there occasionally and come back with loads of stuff we do not need - especially kitchen gadgets!!
What's worse we have one in Southampton now.

It's just a little G cramp at the end with a swivel above. It will take the thickness of the bandsaw table about 40mm.

I agree quality has gone down the pan recently but they do have the occasional item of interest - like these lights. Meatballs aren't what they were either :D [/quote]

Another IKEA option like Brian's. I've just bought a bunch of clamp on (they also wall mount - you get both mountings with each) Kvart spotlamps http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/90152447 for task lighting at approx €5 each plus bulbs.

They seem fine, at that i bought one for each machine. Go for one of the larger bulb size options....

They also do quite a nice line in cheap finger jointed ply storage boxes in various sizes and formats - well worth a look.

They have well priced solid beech 40mm worktop in shorter lengths to the usual 4m too.

I went to IKEA in Thurrock once...and even WITH the map it took me over an hour to get OUT! In the end I broke ranks with the channeling idea and took a short cut through a gap...only to get lost again.

I don't think wild horses would make me go there again...but the lamps look great...so probably will let my keyboard do the walkin'!

HEY!! Suva bracket!! Yeh!!

Cheers for the info!

:D You do have to watch the quality with the buggers all right. Their stuff tends to be a bit like woodworking kit - very tightly layered in terms of price/quality bands.

(e.g. cabinetry progresses from plastic film covered mush, to veneered something or other, and then on to the odd very small solid item)

Trouble is the cheap end is often so scrappy it's not much good...

The light is very good and doesn't put out a much heat - as the halogens do. I have them at home for the computer desks\tables.

Never thought about using them for the workshop. Good idea. Having said that getting a parking spot in Ikea takes ages as does getting thru the till - along with an 8yr old "Can I have that Dad? [30 sec pause] Can I have that Dad?" So I might leave it a while.

All true, but I've found that if you look carefully you can get good stuff.
Our son's solid pine bedroom furniture is still good and solid after 7+ years, the kitchen's fine as are the table and 4 chairs we got for <£100!
The Billy bookcase shelves are bending a little, but they are over full.

Another useful IKEA Light..

I attach them with an old HD magnet or similar to enable them to be repositioned if necessary.

In the case of the Bandsaw the light head is moveable to the rear face out of the way if ever mm of height is required.

Wiring is run through internal framework using some existing safety switch wiring holes and held in place with Hot Melt and the low voltage transformer is linked with some well insulated soldered leads to the NVR switch input and supported with cable ties in the main collum.
