Gosh what an awful thing to do on an old FARM how many trees does he have? The regulations regarding "Forestry" are far more forgiving I am told. Here's hoping common sense prevails!

No one is complaining. The neighbours are fine with it. He has been shopped by someone who wants to force him to sell up because of an idiotic act of vandalism committed by the villain of this piece elsewhere.

I was there last week and heard to whole, horrid story.
That place is a miracle and I urge as many people as possible to write in support.

Could you elucidate?

I'm not sure that I should really go into it on here Woodcrafts but I just wanted to let people know that it is definitely not the case that Mike's wood sawing activities in any way have been a nuisance to anyone. Or that the monument site is endangered or obscured.
He has the support of his neighbours despite the traffic that he attracts to the village every open day which is rather surprising. :) They are a very friendly bunch up there.

I don't know the rights or wrongs, but it seems a pity that a great source of local timber might be forced to close. It's ironic that Grown in Britain Week starts tomorrow. Let's hope, one way or another, Mike's business is able to continue. We have too few mills processing local trees, and supplying woodworkers with quality timber. If anyone knows of similar enforcement cases, it might help Mike with his appeal. He may have made mistakes, but he's put a lot of passion and energy into woodworking.

I also do not know the details but I do hope its not the case of a council worker with too much time on their hands trying to find ways to justify their pay. It seems like a great place from checking the web page, it's a shame there isnt something like that closer to me.

Thanks Nick for your email which brought this disturbing news to my attention.

I have met Mike and Rene and they are good hard working people. Mike is a lovely bloke and I am sad that he finds himself in this worrying position. I can only think that perhaps by oversight he did not apply for the appropriate permission for a change of use as his business grew from a hobby / pastime.

I have been to the timber yard and I didn't even know the remains of a castle were there. The setting is pretty with the farm house and church but somehow to my mind the timber yard is an appropriate use for this land. His machinery sheds are unobtrusive, and as far as I remember not visible from the road, set back in the timber field. It is not a big operation or a place of heavy industrial use / manufacturing.

He should appeal, appoint a team of planning consultants and a planning solicitor to handle his case and apply for retrospective permission.

I agree with Pete (see post above) this is not uncommon, and I hope this sorry story has a happy ending.

Good luck Mike and Renee.

Have you tried Deep in Wood near Oxford? I'm guessing they will be less than 30 miles from you.

Not yet. I may do soon though. I've also seen a place called Surrey Timbers that looks interesting, I think thats about the same distance as the Deep in Wood people from me. I share transport at the moment so getting round isnt always too simple.

I went to Surrey Timbers when they were setting up. Kevin seems like a good bloke. I've heard good reports since then.

Nick
