I often use loose tenons. However, one thing you need to be careful of is that, when glueing up, there is room for any excess glue to escape. Newt kindly made me one of his brass scratch stocks recently and I found this perfect for grooving loose tenons to allow the excess glue to escape. Here it is making some grooves in oak

Very neat, Paul, very neat.

I'm afraid I'm a bit cruder. I make mine a bit narrower so that there is a bit of wiggle-room for alignment. Sometimes I use rectangular-section stock with the edges heavily chamfered, which has the same effect. As the joint strength at end-grain is approx zero, it doesn't really make much difference for shear strength although I admit that a full-width tenon resists racking better.

That looks a really useful tool Paul - I saw the original thread which Rob posted.

How long before numerous UKW members have one? Pete - put my name down for one

That's a great idea! I've seen something kind of similar for grooving home-made dowels but, working the other way - where the jig is "fixed" and you knock the dowel through instead.

Damn these things are breeding - look what I found snuggled up in one of my drawers this morning!

Ed,

Would you mind just checking the rest of your drawers? If you find another one of those, post it off to me, I have been looking everywhere for one and figure I may of left it in one of your drawers instead of mine.

I've checked and theres just the one, seems quite settled in so probably best not to disturb it...
