Hi All,

I'm new to the site so I hope this is all being posted in the appropriate place and so on. A few months ago I attempted my first bit of craft woodwork since college making a small Swallow necklace pendant from cherry wood.

I now wan't to make a similar necklace, this time a Dove, for my nieces christening. I would like to use Olive because of it's connection to the Dove as a peace symbol, however I wondered if anyone could advise me on the characteristics of carving Olive compared to Cherry, I will only have hand tools at my disposal and these were fine with Cherry but a little trickier with Oak that I tred to make earrings from.

Furthurmore I'm looking for a small (aprox 100 mm x 50mm x 5-10mm) Olive off cut to work from. My searches online have only turned up bigger, more expensive pieces and I was wondering if any one on here knew of a place I could get some, or had some spare that I could use.

Best,
Ollie.

Thanks Pete!

I'll try that out. Do you think Olive would be suitable for this project considering I'll be using hand tools, or am I likely to run into problems?

Best,
Ollie.

Hi Ollie

Yes it will be good, its a hard wood it won't be quick to make but it will last.

You should be able to file and rasp in to shape, and if you sand it through the grades it should shine.

Pete
