I'm buiding a bed for my eldest (6 yr old). He's decided that he wants a loft style bed with a desk etc underneath it - strikes me as a rather sensible use of the space.
My design is based loosly on this.
It's going to be made out of pine but with a few more cross pieces between the legs (only at the ends) as if he's anything like I was he'll climb up the end rather than use the ladder .
I've got reclaimed 4x4 for the legs which when cleaned up will be about 3.5x3.5 I'd imagine. All the rest is being made from some pine boards (2400x240x25) which I picked up on fleabay - £100 for 22 lengths.
What I'm wondering is what would be the best (ie strongest) way to fix the rails to the legs ?
I'm thinking of using through tennons - this in my mind should give enough support for the rails. I'm thinking that the shoulders would only be a couple of mm each, leaving most of the wood in place.
I'm not sure though that through tennons would be suitable for allowing me to easily take the bed to bits again in the future.
Perhaps 'normal' tennons which could be finally secured with bolts might be a better idea ?
I'd be interested in what people think would be the best method.
Going to be fun cutting the mortices in 4x4 I'm sure if I take it slow and steady I'll get there without trashing the legs.
WIP Photo's will of course follow.
