I was trying to chop out hinge recesses in a project and didn't have enough height inside the cabinet...butt chisels were needed to give a bit more walloping room.
Here's a pic of a perfectly standard LN bench chisel:

and the same chisel after 10 minutes on the lathe with a little bit of rosewood:

and in use:

No shavings this time, but the proof of the pudding... - Rob

I think the reason you often see old socket chisels minus their handles and with battered sockets is that their owners have used them as butt chisels, giving them "gentle" taps with a hammer directly on the socket. They should have taken the trouble to fit a neat little button handle, as you've done.

Regards.

Nice thinking Rob... Though I don't think I'd have the courage!

I know this isn't strict 'handwork', but saw a video somewhere, of a worker using a hollow chisel, ( sans auger), as a 'corner-chisel', to square off mortices that had been cut by a router. It seemed to work, but I should think he kept the chisel aside from the machine.

Regards
John :)

That's a great idea Rob and shows how versatile the socketed chisels are.

I have a Drawer Lock chisel for even tighter circumstances - Bristol Designs sell them.
