The live centre supplied with my record midi lathe is mediocre: quite small and whines when any kind of pressure is cranked in. Its also totally unsuited to having a wooden cup chuck to fit over it (I want to turn some spheres).

The £20 Axy standard 60deg looks to be substantial build and a very good design configuration for a wooden cup chuck fit. Any views?

Hi,

Ive had one fora couple of months and it runs very smoothly, and quietly.

I wouldn't recommend it if you going to be using a mandrel of any kind though, as its not hardened steel and the tip will wear!

But for normal wood, its good for the money!

I really like the marlin live centre's with the interchangable tips- i've had one on the vb for several years and its still going strong- and i use one on the mini jet for pen's

Hi,

The MultiStar is a good centre (I think this is what George means) It has a choice of tips including a small faceplate which allows you to fix on a wooden block and shape it to suit the job in hand. Especially handy for turning balls or things with a large hole in the centre:

What size Morse taper is your lathe ?

When I recently upgraded I looked at all of them and cheaped for the Axminster set. It's reasonably good. But I wish I'd gone for the Multistar. After seeing it up close after the purchase, I realised it's better in construction. That said, I can't really fault the Axi, it's certainly better than the cheap no-brand one I had before.
