Yes I am going to throw this wide question out to you all but also I want to know from your own experience which scraper plane you prefer?

I have on LN 4 and 1/2 smoothing plane and I love it dearly and think the quality of the tool is fantastic but very soon I will be looking to buy a No.5 and a scraper plane as I feel that there is no better finish than a planed finish. Abrasives just don't match it.

So whats the better of the two scraper planes for when that interesting piece of wood has grains going every which way?

George

Hi

Both scraper planes are very good! i have got the Veritas one and i am very happy with it! plus its a bit cheaper than the L.N

Whatever you go for im sure you will be happy!

Regards

David

I have the veritas one too, I am very pleased with it also although it did take me a while to get used to sharpening it and setting it up. I have it working great now but it feels to me like it could have a bit more blade support however, I haven't used the LN one so I'm afraid I can't give you a comparison. As I always say you are welcome to come and have a go with mine if you get chance to swing by.

Paul Chapman's the bloke to give you chapter and verse on Veritas scrapers, he has the large one and the No80 and thinks highly of both of them. I borrowed his No80 last year and was so impressed I bought one the next day...it's very good.
I 'spect Paul will be along shortly - Rob

As with most questions asked here George, if you do a search on the forum you will find your answer - thisbeing one of the latest to cover this.

Thanks guys.

The Veritas seems to be winning me over, that oak table top is pretty much exactly what I was doing last night busting my *** off with a smoothing plane and some 400 grit paper!

Another question I have is, do you sharpen a scraper plane blade like a regular cabinet scraper?

Hey George, I bought the Veritas Scraper Plane last year! I haven't really had a chance to play with it and find out exactly how it works  but, if you want to have a go, let me know and I'll bring it in to college on Thursday.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with either, they are both top quality plane makers. I use Veritas myself which I'm very happy with. I tend to stick to the same manufacturer if I can also, so all my planes are Veritas (three).

Will do, George. Might even have to break it out for a play tomorrow, just to remind myself of how it works so I can hopefully show you!

This question seems to get asked a lot and my theory is (after using a few Veritas planes but no LNs) that even if the Lie Nielsens are better, are they worth the sometimes quite large price difference?

Take for example the bevel up jointer planes from the two, £210 for Veritas and £310 for Lie Nielsen. Is it 50% a better plane? Doubt it 8)

Also a lot of the time (majority in fact) it seems Veritas get the more votes, maybe because more people can afford them but I have been more than happy with mine :norm:

Mine's a LN, but the LV is more versatile? The LN has a very thick blade which resists chatter, but has to be sharpened with a slight crown to avoid the edge making ridges. The LV has a thin blade and a screw to bow it into a curve, so you can sharpen it straight. If you need a heavier blade LV do one as an extra.
