Gents,
Thanks for all the input. Alost totally decided. A Number 7 and Num 5 1/2. Giving serious consideration to adding a 140 as well. The number 9 will have to wait until the next trip. Dumb question but not too obvious to me. Is the left handed option specifically for left handed people. It would seem more comfortable for a right handed to use the left handed one, or am I just being dumb?

The 140 (I assume that's what you're asking about) comes with a side plate on one side (left or right) that is removable. Once removed the blade is flush with that side of the plane and so you can get in tight to tidy up tenon shoulers etc...ie right up to the shoulder. So assuming you're right handed......

Thanks Roger I was talking about the 140. So assuming I am going to hold the tool in my right hand, and possibly secure the work piece in my left on a bench hook for example then the left hand tool is the correct one for me. Is that right?

Wowza. Interesting. Since the plane is the only thing that's moving, it does appear to be our "prime suspect".

The humidity is kinda low this time of year. But barring any underwear induced static charges :? the corrugated sole reduces the static a lot which would seem to imply less friction. How do measure friction anyhow?

BTW the 140 gets my vote too. Most skewed planes have a right and left version since the grain can run one way or another. So I don't think its for the left or right hand, but just what works for the grain. I have the rightie and have gotten used to it, but wish I had the other sometimes.

I believe so, I have the left-hand 140 and I'm right-handed.

Absolute disaster. I just tried to order a number 7 and a number 5 1/2 and they are out of stock for at least two weeks. Plan totally scuppered!!!

#8 is an option if you're OK with the weight (10 lbs.). Maybe you could try to contact Rob Cosman, the Canadian rep. for LN, maybe he has the 7 and 5 1/2 in stock. He lives in New Brunswick, not next door to the LN factory, but not the end of the world either.

Thanks DC. Good idea about Rob Cosman. Just spoke to them but they are not allowed to ship back into the States so no joy there.

Any other ideas welcome

http://www.thebestthings.com/newtools/lie-nielsen.htm has both the 5 1/2 and 7. I would be surprised if they weren't in stock, but it might be good to call just to make sure. The store is in Virgina, and I have never had a problem with them. Their prices are usually cheaper than LNs, but I think Finetool Journal has the best prices.

Well I managed to order them from Woodcraft that were safely delivered to my hotel and have made it home with me. Pics to follow. Quite beautiful and cut like a dream.
