I've removed the offending plane from sale. Just wanted to say that I was dissapointed with the comment from Tony about what it was worth and what I paid. I'm rather offended at the implication that I'm trying to rip somebody off. The price at Classic hand tools for this plane is £265.95 and the Frog is £66.50. If you manged to get your planes for really cheap prices the good luck to you, it does not mean that I have to sell at the prices you paid.

I honestly think you'll get your best price on e-bay. Can't see any forum members shelling out £200 for it.

Cheers

Karl

Hi BN,

eBay is probably the best bet to sell your No. 4 for £200.00. Mind you, eBay want their not inconsiderable cut. I recently sold a plane for £90.00. (Ooops! £80.00) . eBay put just over £65 into my PayPal Account.

So there's a rough guide, if you want to sell to someone who really understands what's on offer.

Having said that, if I didn't already have one of these, I would jump at a £65.00 saving.

Best o' luck.
:)

Nobody interested? was it something I said  £65 saving on new at the best price I could find plus the Frog option costs a further £60

Ebay's calling

I'm with Bloonose on this one. I buy and sell on eBay daily and what you want is not always what you get.
It is one good looking Plane and if I had the cash I would buy it.

ebay's a swine, whilst it can be useful for moving stuff on I don't think the 10-15% cut they take is value for money (if you use paypal as well). Plus you can no longer leave -ve feedback as a seller - not that I've ever needed to.

BN unless you're desperate for the cash I'd hold on, it's a nice plane but I'm not in the market for a No 4 I'm afraid

The saving is more than £65. The high angle option is £60 on it's own!
Pity nobody here wants a good deal  I may just keep it rather than give it away at a low price. The day's not over yet

Sorry, but i don't think you're offering a good deal at all and the high angle option is not worth 60 quid if the orignal frog is not supplied with the plane

I have bought loads of LN planes new and used over the past 6 years and for a 4 with only one frog - it makes no difference if it York or Standard pitch, it is still ONE frog.

Personally, I would not go over 150 if i were after it on ebay (particually as postage will be 15 quid plus).

Don't forget that people who know what it is, also know it was a lot cheaper than the current retail price a few months ago when you bought it.

I have to agree with Tony. With my new found interest in nice hand tools I would be interested; however for the sake of £65 I'd go for a new one every time.

I can't see anyone paying much more than half list price for a used tool that is still a current model.

There's some funny folk on ebay, though!

Cheers

Yup,,,between them eBay and PayPal make usury de facto. Shame there isn't any real alternative.

Dunno about NO real alternative. I've sold spare stuff via FridayAd while in Milton Keynes, and using ScotAds since moving north. And via the woodworking mags. All of these methods are free, so always worth a try. Especially for selling tools, since quite a few seekers seem to prefer the printed word to electronic.

Let's get this 'shipping/postage' deal sorted out.
Whenever I send out anything that needs 'lumping around', I use a firm called P4D.

They collect from your door and deliver to the destination, all in the price they quote when you fill in the on-line form.

When I sold my Woodrat I paid £11.00 carriage and that included Insurance over the amount I got for the thing. So how large and heavy is a No. 4?

Had I gone to the Post Office, and used Parcelforce, I would have been ripped off. Who did P4D employ as carriers? Parcelforce no less!

The basic parcel rates for Royal Mail include insurance only up to £37.00 or (thereabouts). After that you pay extras. And I would have needed to take the parcel to them as well!

Agree about eBay. They are interested in eBay only! They want our custom, but they don't want us.

I am rather sorry you removed the picture of offending plane
I use to click on the thread just to look at it...lol
It is a tool I want but do not have the funds for one yet...
I have just paid for a Stanley bailey no 4 plane and I must admit
I feel I spent to much on it. Like you have been told I could have got
one cheaper.
I am watching a:
RECORD No 020 COMPASS PLANE.
eBay Item number: 290300028453
Last time I used one of these was 35 years ago...lol

I don't think anyone was suggesting you were trying to rip anyone off; you offered your plane at the price you thought it was worth, and people either thought it was a good price or not.

The price of the plane at classic hand tools, does this include a frog? If it does, and I presume this is the case, then the fact that yours has a high angle frog is somewhat negated. That is a fair point.

I would be interested to see what it got on e-bay. I must admit I did think about it myself (couldn't afford it at a hundred and fifty even!!) as it is a lovely plane.

Don't read too much into it, eh?

Neil

(PS my bandsaw, a bandit 5, failed to sell on ebay for a hundred quid some time ago, and I got it privately after this for a hundred. There is one selling now for £360 with a few hours to go!! You never can tell!!)

Absolutely. Tony once told me he wouldn't pay more than £100 for a LN No6 I was selling  Sold on e-bay for £200 (and that was when a new one would set you back £260).

Just put it on the bay. If you have the standard frog as well as the higher angle, sell the high angle frog separately and put the original back on the No4.

Cheers

It does raise an interesting point though, on other forums I have been on, where they have a for sale section it's against the rules of the forum to comment on the price of an item being sold.

You tend to find that an item will find its market value without comment on it - though as you have seen, selling on ebay can be a lottery. I would like to see a for sale and wanted section on the forum and perhaps this is one of the rules we can have.

Good luck selling your plane BN.

Cheers, Damian

It's a good point actually Damian. Extremely rude of Tony to 'butt in'. Something is worth what someone will pay. If you are not interested then surely your energy is wasted piping up about it?

In addition, Tony's comments may put potential buyers off. They may have been mulling it over and had decided to buy it. But if an experienced member (and Moderator) says it isn't worth it, it may well change their mind.

Some forums I go on you cant post any comments in the for sale /wanted section

The seller puts the contact details on the original post , or if not happy doing that says " contact via PM "

The also have 4 option buttons

1 For Sale
2 Wanted
3 Ebay
4 P/X

These show up on the Subject line

works fine and NO strange comments
