Hi All

I'm in the market for a drill driver for a multitude of jobs that need doing around the house.

Saw thisfrom Lidl this morning. For £50 is there anything else better that I could get? I dont suppose I'm going to get a lithium battery drill driver for less thani £150 so I'm out for a cheap and cheerful one for now and I guess this would suffice.

the 3 year warrenty alone must make it worth it no?

actually I see its a combi drill.

TBH I'm not so sure of the difference between the two.

Is this more for heavy duty work?

Personally, I can recommend this:
http://www.wickes.co.uk/Cordless/18V-Co ... nvt/195517

I bought one about a year ago, and have used it for everything including drilling into masonry and tiling, amongst many other demanding jobs.

It works as good now as the day I bought it. For the value for money, it's superb. The batteries charge quickly and last a long time, it's light and perfect for small jobs about the house. And cheaper than lidl :)

Cheers Byron!

Thinking on it a bit further, I guess what I really need is a drill driver.

I have access to a bosch wired drill with hammer action, so I suppose a drill driver would be more appropriate.

It needs to have enough umph to do the occasional DIY job (such as driving screws into raw plugs that have been drilled into masonry (with the bosch!)) but would be nice if it had some fine controllability for putting screws into pieces of furniture etc.

To that end, I've seen thismade by makita. Their budget range I believe.

Only used an 18v drill driver before which was more than powerful enough, if a little on the big side.

Only a few quid difference between them, but maybe I just dont need the hammer action of the wickes.

Fortunately wickes and lidl are next door to each other near here, so I'll pop along at the wknd to have a look see! Screwfix is near to both as well.

Cheers

Paul

and what the heck is the difference between a drill driver and an impact driver??

SDS drill
Combi Drill
Impact driver
Drill Driver

In that order for hard work to small work I guess? Can someone correct me?

drill driver: drills holes (small in metal) in wood and drives screws
combi drill: as above, but with what used to be called hammer action as an option; whole drill vibrates so tc bit will go through aggregate, if it's up to 6-8mm dia.
impact driver: crossover from motor trade, where a big air powered one takes your wheel nuts off at the tyre bay. Screwdriver or socket bit drives screws / lag screws etc with a series of blows - allows a lot more torque from a small motor (not for drilling though)
SDS drill: takes SDS quick change drill bits and chisels(if rotary stop), for masonry work etc. drill end of bit is belted by a slug of metal as well as rotated (unless rotary stop for chisel) 2-3J for general use, big ones say 10J will rapidly drill holes of 30mm or more in concrete.

Mick - using that link I gave you, have a browse around. They do a nice 14.4v drill driver for just £40 - I have the 18v version, and it's really nice for the money. I think 14.4v will be fine for most small jobs and will be lighter than the 18v and 24v, although I use the 18v all the time, even for small jobs and think it's lighter than other brands of 18v drills.

I'm super pleased with the wickes range of drills, i've not owned really top-end drills, but these seem really good value for money and take a real beating.

When buying battery drills, consider getting a brand name product, that way you have some prospect of getting more batteries when they go south.

If you're not going to go brand name, then go cheap - that way you can replace the whole drill for less than a new battery...

Hi.

I got this Bosch 18v Li-on (lithium Ion) drill-driver from Argos last year for £107.

Just had a quick look and they don't seem to do that one any more on Argos.

Having been recently converted from the unrightious path of cheap tools, I'd reccomend going for a better-known make, if not following the 'Buy-the-best-you-can-afford' mantra.

Argos have this Bosch 14.4v Ni-Cad d/driver for £58.69. I've not used it but the last 14.4v drivers I've had in the past have had more than enough grunt for the jobs I've thrown at them.

HTH.

Bryn :D

ps: I don't have shares in either Argos or Bosch

Hi guys

Thanks for the help and advice.

As it happens I was at a mates last night and his dad had that bosch 14.4v driver and it was a perfect size and felt really well made. Didnt get a chance to drive any screws in with it, but just squeezing the trigger showed its got some grunt.

Its been sat there for a week and the battery had loads of power still in it.

I'll take a look at some and post back with what I get.

Cheers again for the helpful advice as always :)

Mick, I don't think you can too far wrong with cheap drills these days, they all seem to be pretty decent for most basic jobs, bosch is going to be a decent drill though so I'm sure you'll be happy with it, my dad recently kitted out most of his power-tools with bosch.
