I've got some old 'pine type' timber knocked up into picture frames for a very choosey client (yes - her :D ).

Despite its age (over 15 years) the machining appears to have 'woken up' the knots and other associated stickiness and I'm concerned about the potential for bleed through.

Now I know that knotting solution would be the best idea but with a clear finish it would show through if not applied very carefully.

What's the best way to seal the knots and blemishes and still allow a clear finish (danish, oil varnish etc.)?

Knotting is basically shellac - so a coating of clear shellac before you're chosen finish should do you.
Hope this helps

Yes, that should be fine.
As for finish compatability, you can put pretty much any finish on top of blonde shellac - some types of shellac contain an amount of wax, and the blonde or bleached shellac doesn't.
Hopes this helps,
Philly :D
