I think I remember reading somewhere that those were made especially for occupational therapy departments in hospitals, but have never seen one. It looks like a pretty solid job, and as you say, would be good exercise :D .

A related story - a physiotherapist was telling me that some 30 years ago he'd been treating an old boy who had had a hip replacement, but whose other hip was in perfect condition. Turned out he had spent his working life using a treadle lathe, and the perfect hip was the one that did the treadling, while the wrecked one just supported his weight.

I could be wrong but I'm sure Viceroy or Denford Viceroy had something to do with the development or design of that type of lathe in the ebay picture, the tailstock is the same as one on my lathe.
 
I was talking to a guy using a treadle lathe at a show last year and he said that he preferred it to an electric one as it had the ultimate in vartiable speed and torque. His had only the foot power to provide both. Watching him use his he seemd to get a heck of a lick out of it.
