I was working away in the workshop today when a neighbour came in with a handful of reclaimed timber and asked if I could knock him up a gate. Why not I said and started this just after lunch with his help. (Well he does like to learn and has an interest in woodwork. Anyway no WIP pictures I am afraid but we got it in glue up by tea time.

Well it did make a break from the wardrobes for a while.

On the RHS of your pic is an area of the wood that looks like it has some staining. I got a load of pine given to me a couple of weeks ago, and there is some blue staining on some, and I can't get rid of it. I am presuming it goes all the way thru the timber, what the **** is it?

If it is simply a trick of the light in your pic, then sorry to waste your time.

Thanks either way

Neil

No it is not a trick of the camera Neil it is there. I assume it is staining from damp in the timber as this was used outside for fence posts. I don't think there is any way of getting rid of it although I could be wrong but it seems to go well into the wood. I did notice that it was damp to the touch in this area too so not sure if it will eventually dry.

Blue staining on pine is from moisture getting into the wood. I do not know the chemestry of it but maybe someone will know?

In my previous job, I used to work with a lot of imported redwood/whitewood that was stored outdoors (under cover) in huge packs. This blue staining was quite common but, if I remember correctly, you probably won't be able to "plane it out". You're right that it's to due with moisture although, it shouldn't affect any finish, even if it does show through (on clear finishes).

Got the gate finished today and it is now ready for the finish and hanging. My neighbour said it will give the kids something to do if he gives them a brush each. Not bad work for a weekend and I got a crate of beer out of it.

Not bad for a weekend's work, Mailee. Kind of reminds me of that Chinese gate you made in Good Wood a couple of years ago. :)

Yes Olly, that is where my neighbour got the idea from as the Chinese gate is mine. Not had anything published recently in GW though even though I have had three articles submitted since last year?
Well Steve there are always those people who think that we all work for love. Actually there is more to this one than meets the eye as the guy who the gate was for services my wife's and my own car so it is a case of you scratch my back so to speak. I wouldn't have built one for £20 though that is for sure.

That sounds odd... Perhaps it has something to do with the changing editorship? Mark, Dave and now Jon... I know one thing for sure, they are looking for new contributors - they've previously tried to get me on board a couple of times but, well, you know, I'm fully committed elsewhere!

If I were you, I'd drop Jon Bentman an e-mail and see what he thinks or has to say.
