I thought I'd write a short piece on one of the best (fairly) recent additions to my hand tool workshop. The humble trug!
I now keep one permenantly next to my bench.
It is put just ahead of me when I'm planing wood. In the past each pass of the plane would leave a shaving on the floor. Now a quick flick of the wrist and it's in the trug.
Even chiselling, the trug's by my side and it's no effort at all to sweep the chips off the bench into the trug.
It easy then to pour the shaving into a bag for disposal - or even onto the compost heap where most of my shavings go.
And the result - I'm spending much less time at the end of the day cleaning up and I'm no longer walking around in wood shavings all day.
It's a simple little thing, but it's made my workshop day more pleasant - so what's not to like!
