Junior Whithead 6" Planer restoration project

Not content with the little DODD Planer "home workshop" project, which i have barely started.

i picked this little number up last night a Junior Whithead 6" Planer

it runs, but could do with some serious cleaning TLC, this will live at my main workshop & go nicely with the Drum Thickness sander i got from Marcros earlier in the week.

these are the sellers pics, i will post some more when i get into work & start breaking it down.

yeah it looks decent, it appears to be mostly aluminum not cast iron which is a surprise, the date on the plaque says 16/08/1948 which is older than i expected.

it needs some work but i got it broken down & started.

might need some of your guidance for a few bits, i keep thinking of your posts when im fiddling with these things, for example im trying to work out how to remove the badges/makers plates, mine appear to be held on with brass pin type fixings, but they dont protrude the other side, so the only way i can think to remove them is to carefully file the heads off... any advice?

made some progress stripping it down today, that the great thing about old machines, they do come apart easy.

Try gripping with strong side cutters, then twisting left-handed, they may unscrew out.
The cutting edges grip into the pin heads, when used vertically, but it needs good quality powerful cutters.

Them pins like Bod said can be pulled out sometimes, if there brass you can drill the head off easily. If there hardened steel they are really hard to drill. I cover the tag with tape leaving the head and chisel off. Because there hard they are quite brittle.
Nice progress by the way, them switches are really nice.

got a few more hours done on this & managed to get a line to the 200L compressor from my landlords workshop so the soda blaster was used, great things, it removes grease, dirt lose paint & lose rust like you are rinsing it off with a hose pipe.

being mostly aluminum there has been a few knocks & bits of deterioration to a few parts of the castings, will be patching them up & cleaning the still rough casting edges before i repaint & strat to rebuild.

got the badges off thanks to Bod & Wallace, the bigger badge i could pull the pins out, the other two i had to chisel the heads off.
