I've just bought JSP Powercap IP for extra dust protection whilst turning but having tried it I find it to be surprisingly noisy. I know that some noise is inevitable with a fan directly above my face but I wondered how it compares with the Trend Airshield.
I tried a Trend on at the Harrogate show last year and found it too heavy and so I didn't try switching it on.

I guess the only solution would be to get the Dustmaster or similar respirator that has the motor mounted on a belt behind you. This would cost at least twice as much though.

None of the powered helmets are silent. I've not used the dustmaster - are you sure the fan is on the belt and not just the power pack? If that is the case you have a hose connecting the two. I used to have the original Turbovisor, that had the power pack on the belt and a cable to the fan in the helmet. Whilst it worked well enough the cable was a pain, I often got it snagged when I was working. I later bought the version with the battery pack worn at the back of the head, it is great.. Both version have the fan inside the helmet.

I now have a Powercap Lite. The battery pack is much smaller (like a phone battery) and the body of the cap is a baseball cap. It's light and comfortable and much quicker to charge, but I do miss the flip-up capability of the Turbovisor.

I think you'll soon get used to the whirr, whichever one you use, and I certainly wouldn't go for one with a hose no matter what the noise reduction, it's just far too clumsy.

Cheers

I have the 3M Dustmaster the battery unit with fan is worn on the belt
and a hose connects to the face mask.
As Steve says it is a pain to use I often get the airline snagged when using it and the battery is quite heavy also if you stop for a cup of Tea the whole headgear has to be removed.
My mate has the Trend Airshield and would like one myself but they are quite expensive and I got the Dustmaster for free?

I've decided to stick with the Powercap and to just wear ear-plugs for now. Unfortunately my ear defenders aren't quite long enough to fit over the cap :(

Having used it this afternoon I was very pleased with the field of vision it provides and how clear it was compared to my old visor.
Any suggestions as to somewhere to get protective overlays for the screen? The manual suggests that replacement visors are available but I'd rather protect it for as long as possible. I could order some of the Trend ones for the Airshield but are there any designed for the Powercap?
