I agree with Mike on your timber choices.

I have a thought - why not just cut one piece of oak, and have a go at "fuming" one half to create a contrast between the oaks. In effect one part will resemble brown oak the other light oak.

You will also have a perfect match for your joint and the grain pattern will match up as well.
