Another way would be wedged through tenons: simple mortises in the side pieces, through which elongated tenons from the central board protrude. These have a hole through them to take suitable wedges. Two either side and you'd have something rock solid, but readily demountable.

I love this idea, dont think i have the tools and the skill set to pull it off well but i do want to get into wood working more so is a good opportunity to learn and get myself some early xmas prezzies.

Just use a second piece as a hinged stand on the back?
It'd increase the collapsed depth a bit, but would fold up whenever you wanted. Locking box lid stay to stop it from accidentally collapsing...

I like the A frame idea but there will things hidden on the backside of the board such as a 9v battery for a wired light switch, and a few other bits and bobs so wouldnt fold flush, plus would make it double the weight that can fall on little man if it tips it towards him, but could do the A frame with just legs on the backside.

Cut a big square hole out of the middle bit, so it frames the sticky-out bits...

Thanks for all your tips guys, so it can be taken apart i was planning on going with the epoxy bolt idea but instead i went with cross dowl barrel bolt and nut. As i dont have a router i havent recessed the legs in bit that could always be done at a later date. So far its fine and strong but it remains to be seen if its child proof, the ply either side of the bolt is quite thin so can see it it falling apart if a leg gets kicked or something, i may glue in some quadrant support peices as suggested when i get some time after xmas.

Thanks again tho and heres pics as promised... now for the fun part and putting things on it.
