john cockerill saw found in bundle of garden tools, have checked the web for info and all i found was an american site with an identical saw for sale ( :D for a hundred bucks!!! :D ), but nothing else at all.

does anyone know anything about this little saw, it is a gents saw, brass backed in good condition, still sharp enough to use!
I saved it from a fate worse than death (mothers gardening tool kit!!) and now don't know what to do with it.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks folks.

Hi Neil,

They're good tools, I used to have one of their large tenon saws which was a beautifully sturdy piece of kit.

I think $100 might be a smidge optimistic though, there's a steel backed one in reasonable condition on ebay at the moment going for £3.99!

check it out;

thats the one!!! its about 6 or 7 down, John cockerill gents saw.

I know I know, its not worth anything like that, but that is the only info that came up when I searched, and its all there in black and white.

Anyway, tell you the truth it doesn't look any better than one i bought last week for 2.99!!! But i guess maybe it's 'collectable'!!
If anyone wants to give me 95 dollars for it, they're welcome to it, cos I have no use for it at all, I'm afraid to use it in case i damage it, and it has no cosmetic or collectable value to me whatsoever. I should've left it where it was!

I seem to be collecting these type of tools, i am not sure they really serve any purpose!

thanks mate

I'd be tempted to sharpen it as a rip, and use it for cutting dovetails.

You might never need anything else for the smaller joints!
A nice find!

John :)

For what its worth, I have a John Cockerill 8" dovetail saw with a pistol grip. It is a plain saw, iron backed, and I sharpened and set it myself. It cuts extremely well, albeit not as aggressively as my LN or IT, but I would rank it up there with them. Cost me $10 at a swap meet.

Regards from Perth

Derek
