I can't remember the name of the drill from the top of my head but I know it isn't an expensive one and not that powerful (my father's, which I believe he got form Aldi a few years ago). The drill bits look like the image I have posted.

Those are spur bits and should give a clean cut, unless they are blunt or really poor quality or both.

I can't really speak for the quality as I honestly don't know, but I can say that I've been using them for all of the drill holes. I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing which could be making the cuts no as clean as they could be.

You could try sharpening them with a small file. Not difficult to do and there will no doubt be a youtube video showing how if you do a search.

You wont get a clean hole with a brad point or butterfly twist drill as you are going in at 90 then moving to your angle, you end up pulling one side of the bit out of the dowel so the lower edge of the hole rips (as it is doing). As your jig didn't work, I'd be tempted to try a piece of tape over where you want to drill, it should help a little bit with tear out. the jig is still the right idea, but you might need to make it from something other than a old piece of fast grown pine.

crack on fella, if your not painting it then find yourself some wood filler that's colour matched or use the old trick of sawdust and woodglue to make your own, apply a thin smear under and around each branch let it dry then do your sanding for top coat, if you've got a thin enough fill, it shouldn't show on the finished project.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about the tape idea but I was under the assumption that it was only for metal to stop it slipping, but I reckon that you're onto a good idea with that so I'll give it a bash tonight and hope for the best.

As for filling and paint, I've got 2 spray paint colours of white and gold but haven't decided what's going where yet. I'll see if there is any sawdust about what I can use to fill in, if needed that is. I'll also try to find stronger wood for the jig, if the tape fails that is.

Will post pics of progression.
