It`s arrived, but i`m not gloating..... Well just a bit.

I just like to publicly thank Philly for my new skew miter plane, it`s excellent.
I`ve been out in the shop tonight "playing". It was quite sharp when it arrived, but a little tinkering & i was producing wonderfully thin shavings.

All i have to do now is make a shooting board..............Oh & a bench to work on, & i`ll be turning things out left, right & center.
Thanks again Phil it really is a joy to use.

Nice one, Doug. Does it produce shavings that are so rediculously thin you can read newspaper print through them? Phil was showing off with that at Yandles, the blackwood plane!

You still haven't started your workbench??? :shock: I'm looking to buy the timber for mine in the next week or so; better hurry up! :wink:

Only thing I don't like about these planes is the spelling... Mitre! :roll:

The wood is still acclimatising to the workshop, well that`s my excuse
Having said that, i`ve managed to machine some PTFE blocks to act as bearings for the tail vice runners, which are drilled & ready to fix to the front of the vice.
So everything is coming together, i just need a break in the work schedule, so i can get on with it.

Just out of interest, Baz............what is the advantage of the skewed blade with a plane used at a shooting board? I assume this plane is only for use with a shooting board?

The blade cuts progressively through the fibres of the timber and in theory it's easier to use the tool...btw Mike, you shouldn't be looking at this sort of stuff! :lol: :lol: - Rob

The skew also help keep the work tight down on the bed of the shooting board.

Personally,reading a newspaper through ultra thin shavings has never done it for me,I use my glasses instead :lol:

If you're using a shooting plane with a skew then it means you don't have to have a ramped shooting board as you get the same effect with the plane. I've read a lot about shooting boards recently, the sites I found most useful were Derek's, Alf's and White Mountain

After being given a lesson by Philly at Yandles on how to adjust a wooden plane, with one of his beautiful mallets, i decided that a hammer would be too brutal to set up my new prize.
So today i thought i`d have a go at making a mallet of my own, made from Ebony & Beech, I hope this is up to Philly`s standards.
