I just bought a Google Android tablet (new) for £35. Be interested to see how it performs.
Me too - keep us posted. At that kind of price they're almost disposable...

Bloody conman. 'Out of stock'. Huh. I hate time-wasters like this on eBay.

Out of curiosity, dw, but why are you looking at an iPad? There are a lot of much cheaper Android based alternatives.

I am having the same thoughts, its my kids, they cannot understand that their dad has not got one.

One of them says don't buy one, get it with a telephone contract and they give you one at so much a month. But I am only out one morning a week so what do I need a mobile for? :?:

So not going shopping today.

Well I wouldn't be without my iPad mini.
I just spent a few days in hospital where they had free wifi - could read the news and newspapers, watch live TV and iplayer if wanted. Send messages and emails. Access this forum using Tapatalk etc etc

Well I just tried out a generic A13 Cortext A8 powered 7" tablet. OK...it only cost £31 and so one should not expect too much.

I guess in the finally analysis whether the screen lag is acceptable to you is down to personal choice and whether or not worth £31. For me, five seconds to return to the previous page is not and so it's going back.

As I said, it did only cost £31 but does highlight the fallacy of buying cheap!

I just did some counting.

I have 33 gbs of pics

11 gbs of music

2 of paintings

6 of videos.

51 gbs. total on the pc since 1998.
how would I pick and exchange files to use on an Ipad. I don't think I would want to pay for a 64gb model.

??? That seems an awful lot of space for a PC made in 1998.
What size hdd does it have?

33gb is ALOT of pictures.!
If they are average picture sizes, that's between 30,000 to 60,000 pictures.

Look up AirStash if you want limitless portable backup that'll work with i-things and pcs. Uses SDcards up to 128 gig.
Would not replace my ipad with another apple product. Too much form over function with often insurmountable proprietary restrictions.
If there was a modern psion equivalent I'd jump ship in a heartbeat.

Lol true. Though the series 7 had open comms, didn't need special batteries, was available the instant you switched on (WHY does an iPad have to dally when it's switched on?), a superb keyboard for touch typing and a set of apps that actually worked (email, browser, word processor, etc) none of which iPad has (unless you buy them as extras, or put up with the appalling included browser, email, calendar)
Must admit, the virtual keyboard isn't bad once used to it, but the autocorrect gets worse with every release, it seems.

Surely most of your critique is valid for all tablets....time to boot up, no physical keyboard etc.

What's wrong with Safari? It works fine for most folks as does email ...just curious.

Never had an iPad 'dally' - instant-on is one of the core features; what's yours doing??

Horses for courses; most people find the pre-installed apps to be just fine, and plenty of others are available for free, or at pocket-money prices if they don't suit your needs. Apple's iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) has been free with iOS and OSX devices since around September last year, btw.

Agree about autocorrect - I keep it switched off ;)

It's strange how people often say that in-built software doesn't work but don't add any context.

Maybe the users are simply not flexible enough to adapt their working practice or are just trying to do tasks that 95% of users wouldn't normally do in the first place. Both of which are problems related to the operator rather than the device.

In terms of switch-on delay I can't remember whether the Psion series 7 came with 1Gb of inbuilt memory, multiple Gbs of onboard storage and a 10 hour (allegedly) battery life or not?

My iPad is ready pretty quick, if I don't turn it off during the day.

Yes Ben but I have had around 4 computers since 1998 and the one I am using now has 300gb hard drive and I have a table hardrive of 500gbs. Posted many projects wips

dw...I usually find those little blue pills work [/quote]

I need more than blue pills now. Strong cynanide would be handy.

the ipad was working well last night for mail and net, today its up the creek.

I used the ipad camera and sent a picture to my daughters address (definitely) and it came up in my inbox mail on my desktop computer. (don't know if my daughter has got it yet)

Is that possible?

Anyway virginmedia are up the swanney at the moment on my desktop, the loading bar will not complete so locked out there. (this is being sent via blueyonder windows live mail)

Ah I see. With you mentioning XP and a PC from 1998, I presumed you only had the one.

You could always get the smaller iPad and use cloud storage/Dropbox etc plus keep your portable hdd.
I'm sure I've seen USB adapters for the iPad so that you can move items to and from it.
That way you don't have to have everything stored on it.

Also remember that the capacity of the iPad you get will be minus 2gb or so for the OS plus some more for any apps you get.
