Good Surname or what ?":2df9ihmh said:
Here's hoping I get at least 1 positive comment

Well, I kind of like it. Doesn't make me want to go out and buy or make one exactly like it. It's maybe a little top heavy, but I think it's generally tasteful and would fit into, as you say a mix of styles. I think it could fit into our home, if I had something similar. I might even consider making something similar, but with a few personalised changes.

By the way, I absolutely hated the Savage piece, and virtually everything he makes. He's certainly a highly skilled maker, but I think his designs are hideously intended to shock and unsettle. IMO

I must admit I prefer it like this:

So many people who don't like this piece - but they haven't sent me pms with pieces they do like!!! (along with a brief explanation and link ot website if possible)

I agree with a lot of what people have said about it being rather top heavy however I still want to stand up for it as it's a lovely piece.

I thnk it looked more balanced with the top on BUT one thing for me would be the hearts I'm sure there could be a more appropriate shape?

I personal don't like it ............. even though it is improved by the removal of the top I still don't like it

I guess I'm thinking of a piece that was my Dads and will be mine once my Mum down sizes'......... I is in some respects similar in function i.e. fold down desk area. but the whole feels/looks is more functional and solid with a bookcase under the desk area rather than the spindly legs

This piece doesn't float my boat. I generally like Arts and Crftas style pieces but like many have said this seems top heavy and even with the top digitally removed it still looks clumsy to me,

and I have sent you something Tony.

Cheers

I actually like it, at least for the style. There, I've said it.

I have several fall-front desks. All have something along the top of varying heights. I supposed this was to keep things from pushing off the top or into the wall, or lining books up neatly or something.

Hearts and flowers and other cut-outs are common on early A&C items. So while I don't like hearts as decoritive items on furniture, I don't find it out of place.

The arch theme is a common element on the piece. With the benefit of viewing the piece as opposed to designing and building it, I would have repeated the arch element of the bottom stretcher, except arching it horizontally towards the back to make a touch more room for the feet.

Take care, Mike

I've never really understood the Arts & Crafts movement or a lot of the art, such as the Pre Raphaelite movement, that was going on in Britain at that time.

I think Paul that the Arts and Craft movement was a reaction to the Pre Raphaelites, in that they were fed up with the precision of the Brotherhood in their work. So they started their own movement . An analogy, on a larger scale perhaps The Waltz and Rock and Roll.

Still, I don't like the piece looks a bit slap dash, but then I love the Pre-Raphaelites
