There are ears, eyes, and long, long tentacles. Slainte.

I agree with what you wrote richard--although the tentacles bit has a ring of Mr burns in the simpsons feel about it !.

If I look at a piece of work and I think its crap/rivetting/delightful/unusual/characterful/tired etc I'll say so, and give solid rational reasons why; I think thats still OK?? If a furniture maker or any other craftsman is so sensitive that they cant take constructive criticism maybe they shouldnt go into the public domain as there will always be someone who either loves (or loathes) their work. And anyway just because you criticise a chair or whatever it doesnt follow that your automatically by default critiicising its maker (does it??) When I made comments about Mr Savags chairs, I was talking about his chairs, no remarks were directed at him personally. I've got nowt against him, he is undoubtedly a skilfull craftsman. Some of his "coarser" tables were much more interesting, but the chairs.....get me outta here

The "art", of course, is keeping the constructive criticism detailed and justified, without slipping into loaded language and offensive rhetoric on the way.

Even a perfectly reasonable opinion can be expressed offensively; in that case it's not the opinion that's offensive, but the language of expressing it, and "I'm entitled to my opinion" is a poor defense.
