Right......that is towards the sharpened screwdriver end of the spectrum of how this might be done......therefore........I'm mightily impressed! Well done.

I was wondering how this was done - so if I understand right you cut out the veneer for the letters, glue them onto the dark brown veneer and then "trace" around them with a scalpel, lift them back off, lift off the cut out brown veneer and then stick the letters back down?

Does this mean that the "2009" is half way through the process - the brown veneer having been lifted out of place and awaiting the letters to be stuck down again?

With your method in mind.

That is superb, painstaking work extremely well executed.

Thank you for taking the time to do it, and show results with an explanation.

Miles almost. When letters are stuck down I only make a faint mark around the letters. The reason is that the brown verneer is a Bars...d to cut. Scalpel blade will follow where the grain goes not your make line. With the letters removed out of the way you can watch the cut of the scalpel. So you only make light cuts (several passes) before you are through the brown verneer. Rush it and you will end up with gaps around the letters.

In the photo above the 9, ~ 2 0 0 9 are still glued ready for a light marking. They will then be taken off and carry on as I mentioned. Time wise I have spent about 20 hours with the inlay

Having worked with my farther restoring antique furniture you get to see some real top notch inlay work. Just thinking that this was done 200 + years ago blows your mind to the skill they had.

Thanks to all your comments. Go on have a go yourself, it's not rocket science.

Absolutely splendid, were I permitted to, I could spend hours being fascinated by watching an artisan do such beautiful work, thanks for showing and explaining the methods, you must be very proud.
As an aside, does anyone have any idea as to why Mr Guinness signs his name as "Arth" as opposed to Arthur?

Rich.
