I have recently downloaded the free version of Sketchup in the hope that I might use it for design of future woodworking and cabinet-making projects.

As a complete novice with this software, I spent a large portion of this evening trawling through the Design forum and reading various Sketchup related posts.

What is immediately apparent is the incredible willingness of forum members to share knowledge and experience with others. It is hugely generous and very much appreciated by novices in the genre like me. My particular praise with regard to Sketchup must go to Dave R who seems to have the valuable knack of explaining complex issues to novices in a clear and understandable manner. Thank you so much for all your input Dave; a truly great contribution.

Whilst I intend to use Sketchup primarily for the reasons mentioned above, I am wondering if there exists in one place a copyright-free library of woodworking designs that one can call up as Sketchup files to use? Any such sources would be appreciated.

Meanwhile, its back to the various tips and tutorials for me with a sincere "thank you" to forum members who make the life of a keen but ignorant novice so much more enjoyable!

I have to agree with you there as I have learned quite a lot from Dave's postings and teachings. I did use Sketchup before joining the forum but found out much more about it afterwards thanks to Dave.

Hi LWS, Well said. I call Dave the Sketchup Daddy, and quite rightly so. Have you seen Dave's FWW Blog?

As far as downloadable sketchup models go, there is the Google 3D Warehouse. I'm not sure if these are copyright free though. If you search the warehouse, you can find almost anything you are looking for.

Aww, shucks. Thank you all for the kind words. I'm glad I've been able to help you out. I certainly enjoy doing it.

In response to your question, LWS, as far as I know, the only repository for SketchUp models is Google's 3D Warehouse. As SlimJim said you can find just about anything there. I would advise caution however. There are many excellent models but there are also many that leave a lot to be desired. You may find you need to do a lot of rework to make the models useful. It may make more sense to start from scratch. You should check to see with what precision the models have been drawn and also check to make sure that lines that should be parallel with the axes actually are.

I don't intend that last paragraph to come off as mean-spirited or disparaging of anyone's SketchUp models or their drawing skills. The way 3DW works, though, anyone can upload models and so it falls on those who wish to use those models to do the checking and editing. I guess it is pretty much the same as the rest of the Internet. Hmmm.....

Thank you again for your kindnesses. I'm still ready to help.

Dave

Worth saying again :)

DaveR helped me get from someone that struggled with sketchup and it not working how I thought it should to being pretty confident in using it - and having a drawing that was easy to edit and easy to work from.

So that is another 'thanks Dave' !
