I'm new to DIY need REALLY basic help

This is probably a simple question but this is my first ever DIY project, bare with me, much appreciated.

Ok, I'm making a box frame and I need to make a rabbet, however because it's a box frame it needs to be alot deeper than a usual rabbet. I have a rabbet/recess plane which I stupidly thought would be fine for the job, however the guide on the plane for some reason is thicker than my wood so it's impossible for the plane to sit flush on the wood and be in my vice at the same time.

So I began to plane it from the other angle. This is where I got to..

This was where the beams for the guide ran out of clearance and I could plane no further down, I tried without the guide but it just started to go wrong

So here's the full recess that needs to be made for the glass to sit

My real question is how can I do this cleanly and accurate, I cant use my current plane depth ways or width ways with the guide?
I'm willing maybe to shell out for a new tool if it's going to get the job done for sure but I don't want anything big/expensive.
Stuff I have currently: A mitre saw, a recess plane, an all in one work bench + vice, a saw. Thats all my cutty type tools.

You have been caught by our spam trap - a couple more posts and your pictures should appear. Wthout them I am afraid I am finding it a little difficult to envisage what you are trying to do. However, the usual way to cut a rabbet is with a router and straight bit cutter, or you could use a hammer and sharp chisel depending on the length of rabbet you are trying to cut. Cut both lines with a hand saw and remove the waste between them with the chisel.

I can't really grasp what you are trying to do.

However if you are trying to remove all the wood marked in yellow on the second photo, then could you not start with thinner wood and glue & pin on a second strip to obtain the profile you need?

Yeah I'm trying to get rid of that wood, in that pic I already planed some away though.

Yeah I need to end up with an L shaped profile, so if no one knows how I can do it without heavy duty tools I may have to make an L out of 2 pieces I guess...

what do you mean by "box frame"? maybe if you gave an idea of the wider project the forum could suggest another way of tackling the issue?

A box frame is a deep picture frame usually used to display a 3d object rather than flat artwork. The glass goes against the edge of the rebate, the inside edge of the frame is then lined with strips of mountboard almost to the full depth then the backing is fitted against the edge of the mountboard.

one other way I have seen them done is to cut a thin groove for the glass to fit into thenn just a shallow rebate at the rear for the backing, the only disadvantage is that the glass has to be fitted when the frame is assembled

You could clamp it down and just chomp into it with a router and do a final pass against a guid to get the final straight edge.

A router is a sound investment for any workshop aswell if you dont have one!

It would seem a large job and a waste of wood to hog away that much material just to get a lip. I would use two pieces of wood and glue a lip onto the other piece, that would make it a nice easy job.
