If you've not already been, the American Museum, Roman Baths and general architecture (Abbey, Circus, Royal Crescent etc) in Bath are well worth a visit, Phil.

It was an interesting place, but I'm pretty sure i wont be revisiting now 8)

I haven't as yet booked anywhere. A round trip would be nicer than going too much further, it's a 400 mile round trip as it is.

If it's changed that much in 12 years then I wouldn't recognise it. 1964 or 65 when I visited, followed by a cream tea in Cheltenham.

I found Slimbridge to be rather commercialised, on my second visit; compared to the first time I went. It was all rather faded and careworn. Maybe it's just me, but that was the general impression I got.

Hi

If you or partner are a Poldark fan, try Chavenage House near Tetbury. Used as 'Elizabeth's' House and in any case a really interesting and quirky place. One bedroom has the original tapestries made for it in 1540ish AND it was slept in by Oliver Cromwell!!

Don't try Highgrove VERY EXPENSIVE!!

Also, perhaps park up in Stroud, a really lovely place with a weekly Farmer's Market on Saturdays, and walk along some of the Severn & Thames canal which is starting to be restored.

Finally, Woodchester Mansion is an amazing place. Left half finished over 100 years ago, you can see how a stone mansion was built. The park around is NT but the house is run separately. Even a view on line shows how incredible it is!The Rose and Crown used to be a nice pub just by there

Slimbridge is a no. The only birds we're interested in are the ones we eat. Highgrove is a no, anyway, I'm Cornish and wouldn't give Charlie Boy the parings of my nails. :lol:
I think I'm going to leave my loved one to her own devices on the Saturday as I'm at Westonbirt for the day. It would be good to find something else for the Friday afternoon and the Sunday though.

Phil, I've been trying to think of something fairly local which (judging by your posts) you would find interesting. I reckon you might enjoy the Museum of Bath at Work.
It's mostly the workshops, equipment, tools and stock of Bowlers Engineering, a long established Bath firm who did all sorts of work in metal and branched out into making and bottling fizzy pop. They never modernised from Victorian times so when the premises got demolished for a sixties road widening it was an obvious move to put everything into a museum.

Although it's in Bath, it's not bad for access. The Park and Ride bus from Lansdown stops close by at the end of Julian Road, or else you can reserve a disabled parking space right outside if you phone the museum first.
