I love being right, and knowing that the whole lot of you are wrong and know, sadly, that I am right. I also love Phil and Aled knowing that I am right whilst also knowing that squillions of people don't know that I am right and that they think they need more planes, thus keeping them busy. I also love the fact that some of you collectors are trying hard to make sense of this, and are wishing I had tried it in English.

:D

All that honing! How do they find time to do anything?

Roy.

#1,#2 #8 edit and a #5 havent got one of those either oddly enough

Record 73 bought from Ray Isles years ago
Record 43 ebay, actually I have 3 or so
Record 050 from an old carpenter when he retired, the cap is
connected to the body with a small chain
S&J 4 12th birthday pressie from Mum
Record ss 3 ebay, I have a really shiny Stanley in a box but I prefer
this
Stanley 1900 ish 7 found for £25 in an antique shop last year, it is
wonderful
Record T5 The ultimate handplane?
Ray Isles A8 One of Ray's prototypes
Record Compass ebay years ago, when you need it...
Stanley 60 1/2 Old from Ray Isles when I got the 73 and the A8, that
was a good, but expensive phone call

Sadly I have all those :) so I've almost given up hunting :) Now if you asked for a wish list for a 100 or even 20 planes I could include all sorts of good stuff from all these new makers and I could use my old 10 to build a cabinet to put them in, does anyone really use a Holtey?

For what purpose is this list? The basic 10 to use to make something? Just by hand or with the addition of power tools? Or 10 you like best? Or 10 with sentimental value? Or the 10 you wish to gloat about? Seems to me we've got lists based on all different criteria here.

I think the OP was actually a cunningly worded question to sort the collectors from the users ;)

Isn't it always to glo^H^H^H make something?

I think for me I tend to want to try EVERYTHING (why else would shows work) and then settle down using those that really earn their keep.

If it doesn't get used and gathers dust it only does that for a few months and then it is up on the 'Bay for those...to earn enough "excuse money" to buy another one I haven't tried yet!

And so the slope goes on.....

BUT...out of this slippery world eventually percolates some real keepers...

How do you guys do it?

Can`t manage 10, but i do have & use all of these:-

Stanley No7
Stanley 4.5
Philly skew mitre
LN low angle block
Stanley victor No20 compass

Hello all,

first post, although I have been "lurking" (? looking but not a member) for a while. Really interesting and useful forum. I hope to post one of my efforts before too long.

Well, I am only an inexperienced hobbyist, so I can only present a list of what I have and what I think might be useful, but I have the following:

Stanley block (the simplest sort)
Record No 5
Stanley SB4 (no chip breaker but seems to work anyway!)
Paramo bench rebate (planemaster)

The SB4 is now used for rough work and the No 5 for the rest. A router is standing in for moulding and rebate planes!

Longer term I might want a longer plane - No 6 or 7, although the 5 seems to do for now. I want to try to keep the number under control...

Not strictly a plane, but my cabinet scraper has been one of the most useful tools to me for removing paint and varnish etc.
