been up to my eyeballs with work for the last 6 months (for example have dealt with 74 e-mails and about 10 phonecalls today) which has made me decide I need a tool present.
Also I've been given a present of some cash off my mother

so who owns one of these, do I need one, is there something better I can buy :

Hi Paul,

To award yourself something of that price range you must have been working hard

Dont know if this is a help or a hindrance, but a friend of mine who owns a joinery shop up here in not so sunny Norfolk had the Axi-senior drum sander which turned out to be not that good.
He had a lot of problems setting the rollers, and he could never get it to run right.
Now this could have been a one off,or operator error but he got shot of it in the end.

Down your neck of the woods on Saturday, to pick up a piece of machinery at Midsomer-Norton.

Anyway good luck with your choice.

Mark.

Were you so busy that you missed Christmas six-months ago, or something??? :D

Lord Nibbo bought one of those models off eBay a short while ago and I don't think we've heard any complaints yet. I'm also pretty sure it was the cheaper model of the three.

What happened with your plan to buy/build a workbench - did you get anywhere with that?

In my opinion, these sanders certainly aren't 'necessary' and would have to be seen as a highly luxurious purchase... There'd also be some room for gloating around the forum! :D

Maybe you should look at getting your 'bench situation sorted - and, save some money in the process!

I'd love one. But I do wonder why you want to buy this? Are you sure this is the next essential purchase?

not sure this is my next purchase, but a lot of what i aim to make is square faced so thinking this could get rid of one of the jobs I hate (the sanding) or at least reduce it significantly, hope Nibbo see's this and gives a review

watched a wood whisperer podcast and saw him use his, 5 seconds and he'd sanded something that would take me about 15 minutes, every time i've sanded a big flat surface since i've remembered that podcast :D

Olly, bench is still in plan, actually was going to ask if you could send me the sketchup of yours (will pm you)

not sure it is tom, but have promised myself a present, got some cash burning a hole in my pocket so thinking of where best to invest it. I'd like to be able to make more projects faster, and thinking this is a quick time saving device, at least thats what i'm telling myself

So what else do you need in the workshop?

By al means buy it, but it seems like your money could be better spent on things you need.

thats the problem, my lack of imagination ! already got :
a table saw,
router table,
planer thicknesser
SCMS
morticer
spindle sander
extractor system (all now plumbed in)

also :
set of chisels
number 5 clifton plane
veritas block plane
straight edges
etc etc

Dunno mate, I'm sure you'll be over the moon with the drum sander. The yankie woodwhisperer has the bigger Jet and I've never heard him complain.

common sense would say i put the money towards a new roof for the workshop, but thats just not exciting :D :D :D :D :D

I hate to be sensible. But I think you should think hard.

the obvious addition to the set up is a lathe ;)

don't see the attraction of lathe work, furniture is what floats my boat

Yes I did get a Jet 22-44PLUS.

I really didn't think anyone would be interested in a revue

Well the first thing that hit me when I saw it was it's bigger than I imagined it would be and mine came on a frame stand not the cabinet which leads me to the weight, it's at least a two man job to lift three men would be better especially to lift the motor end, I've only used it about five or six times so far, that was to flatten hardwood door threshholds and to sand pieces for an LCD TV stand to put on my boat as the stand that came with the TV was utter rubbish.

So how does it perform

As I've already warned the main part is heavy 85kg then add the extension tables and you are talking about 100kg (220lbs) add a stand with strong locking wheels and your talking 120kg in excess of 250lbs

The chap I bought mine off also included 40 80 120 240 grit loadings all full rolls not used :D

The 2.4HP motor is very quiet, infact I can't hear if it's running when I turn on my Sip dust/chip collector. and talking of collecting the dust there is no real noticeable dust present during operation.

So far I've only tried to load it once with 80 grit and reading the manual after doing it I found I should have started at the outer end and finished at the motor end  It worked fine though

Conclusions.... I've never ever managed to sand anything as flat as this machine can do it not even using a random orbital, I've never done it as quick either, The smallest piece I put through it was less than 6" square, so to get a finished thickness is a job it can do with small pieces that a thickness /planer can't do. As I've already said I haven't used very much yet it's early days, all I can say is I'm very impressed so far.

Edit....

I may have been lucky as the machine I bought looked brand new and hardly used and I got it for £695 so it's worth waiting and looking for second hand.
