Yes I did get a Jet 22-44PLUS.

As I've already warned the main part is heavy 85kg then add the extension tables and you are talking about 100kg (220lbs) add a stand with strong locking wheels and your talking 120kg in excess of 250lbs

Conclusions.... I've never ever managed to sand anything as flat as this machine can do it not even using a random orbital, I've never done it as quick either, The smallest piece I put through it was less than 6" square, so to get a finished thickness is a job it can do with small pieces that a thickness /planer can't do. As I've already said I haven't used very much yet it's early days, all I can say is I'm very impressed so far.

Edit....

I may have been lucky as the machine I bought looked brand new and hardly used and I got it for £695 so it's worth waiting and looking for second hand.

wow, had no idea it would weigh so much, may be a problem as I have a small workshop so would have to have it mobile. Alternative would be to put it in the garage but then looks like it would need a dedicated extractor (which would push it way out of sensibility)

mmmm. :? :?

I'm almost power-free, but have a small bandsaw, a bobbin sander and the 16-32
Starting again, a 22-44 would be my first power purchase.
The 16-32 qualifies as B 'eavy in my book, so doesn't surprise that you'd need a chum to help set up the 22-44.
Does need good dust collection.

thats the problem, my lack of imagination ! already got :
a table saw,
router table,
planer thicknesser
SCMS
morticer
spindle sander
extractor system (all now plumbed in)

also :
set of chisels
number 5 clifton plane
veritas block plane
straight edges
etc etc

An alarm?
Or locks? Cages over the windows?

an alarm goes down along with a new roof, not really something to get me excited

Paul, you have an e-mail.

Lord Nibbo, thanks for your review. I've seen people attempt to build 'machines' with similar functions to this before. Trouble is, while they can be relatively cheap and straight-forward to build, I've not seen one that incorporates some kind of power-feed or feed rollers so, you're having to feed the stock through manually, which never sounds very smart to me... You wouldn't do that with a thicknesser now, would you!! :?

What are you like for power tools, Paul? Routers and things like that...

got 2 quarter inch dewalt routers, and the half inch triton mounted in my router table. Got a biscuit jointer, circular saw, belt sander, palm sander and an orbital.

Looks like I may have shopped myself out and like you said would be better of investing in wood. Bugger.

Olly's got a great idea there. Build your own drum sander. Give you something to do in the workshop and a tool at the end of it. Plus you'll save some money. Just make sure you set aside a budget for the project.

You could always spend a couple of hundred pounds on a ½" router for freehand work. When you come to tackle work on a larger-scale, even stuff that's too big to fit over your router table, you may find that ¼" routers aren't quite big enough.

I remember you buying that Clifton no.5!  Do you have a smoothing plane. a no.4 or 4½?

don't see the attraction of lathe work, furniture is what floats my boat

spindles, side tables, wine servers, ladder back chairs etc etc.... ;) there's more to the round side than forms and bowls :D

going back to the original question of pauls tool present - what about an incra system for the tablesaw and/or router table ?

thats something I had thought about as it seems so popular with others in the fourm, but I'm not sure what it gives you apart from an accurate measuring tool ??

buy yourself a spindle moulder - they can be had reasonably cheaply. Great for making doors and your own mouldings and as you complain of having money burning a hole in your pocket, once you've bought some tooling you should be suitably skint.
