I bought a new (old) plane, and found some strange damage.

This is my Record 5 1/2 which I bought for a tenner on Gumtree
Streaky Plane (Small).jpg

It wasn't very rusty when I got it, but when I ran it across some 120 grit these lines showed up. As it was pretty flat (apart from a little dip behind the blade) I didn't do any more to the sole. I sharpened the blade and it is now one of my favourites. My thought was that it must have happened in the casting.

And yes the blade is parallel!

I think at some time in it's life, it's been stood for a while on some damp corrugated cardboard. Those marks are due to corrosion - nothing I know in casting practice could cause them.

I've never seen that happen, although I've often seen sap on the sole of a plane. Interesting idea, but I'll stick to it having sat on something for a long time whilst stored.
Well, sap, or something else... I've noticed some of my thinner shavings that have gotten stuck against the sole also occasionally showed a touch of singeing.
Just a thought, really.

Going out on a limb here..........I've never bought a Stanley or record plane new in a box.

Would I be guessing that the box they are sold in has the ;
1, Same direction of corrugation
2, And the width of each corrugation

......matches the marks show in this thread?

Possibly some sellers would throw away the manky box as it might but buyers off :D

Regards,
Dave
