The only 'problem' is that the cable comes into the living room, straight into the TV. But my 'study' (spare room) is upstairs. I'd prefer the router was up there. So I have used homeplugs. Not ideal but the speed is still very good. I'm not particularly bothered about upload. I do a lot of uploading when I'm doing web work. But I can be patient (and charge for it) ;). I used to do all my 'big' up/downloading at work, which I will be doing again in six weeks 8-[

The other issue we have is that the scart leads for the TV are sunk into the wall and the picture quality is rubbish. HDMI is fine, but no HDMI out on the V Box. Which means I'm going to keep bugging them to do me a deal on a V+ box in a few months. ;)

Wizer, good deal, but will not be sustainable.
They always find an increase down the line, also they swear that they told you the offer was only the first 3 months, . Or something, but not a bad service otherwise I would have emigrated long ago.

Typical, Late last night Mcaffee started going bananas. This morning trying to get rid of the virus I managed to erase my main PC's install share  Cleaning the virus wasn't going very well so I cut my losses and reinstalled both machines! Been at it best part of the day.

whats this , what this , back to work mate ? hc

Yes, I've set myself the goal of six weeks. I'm not entirely confident. But work have sorted out something for me to do with reduced hours. So it's worth a go.

Tom,

I've been with Telewest/Virgin for quite a few years, when I first had it installed I had major problems which turned out to be because I was running Mcaffee. I was advised (they're not allowed to tell you outright) by Telewest support to remove it, because at the time it was a know problem, which I did and as soon as I did I had no problems at all. I don't know if the 2 parties have sorted there differences out these days but I just thought I'd throw my two cents in.

Steve :)

hi all

these speed test where you all seem to be getting some really fast speeds are you all getting your supply from the cable system or are you still getting it via the phone lines?.hc

What I find strange is that my speed test shows this

but my Netmeter software shows 600.9Kb/s when the test was running which is 0.6Mg/s. Watching the Wood Whisperer last night it was 135Kb/s for all of the video, with lots of buffering, and I'm supposed to have a 2MB line.

Which is the most accurate and consistently reliable test?

That's interesting Steve. Of course, the thing that Mcaffee was not compatible with was the Virgin software, not the actual Internet connection. The first thing I did when the engineer left, was chuck the CD away. There's no need for all their bloated software. I just logged directly into the router, configured WiFi and the connection settings. That's it. No need for all the rubbish they try to install.

Martin, Virgin Cable is generally always going to be much faster. But one reason for your low results would be the distance from the exchange. If you really are 100 miles from the exchange, I'd say you're doing ok with over a meg. There was a time that they wouldn't even let you have ADSL if you were over a certain distance from the exchange.

Not always  Week 150+ and the housemates remain very chuffed with their deal... Smug? Yep! :D

FWIW re location of modem etc... I've completely rewired my installation from the point it enters the house. Very easy.

that's interesting I'm geting faster speeds over the phone lines than some of you guys are getting through cable.

Matt, I understand what you say, Virgin sometimes go back to their original quote on my direct debit, their accounts can be completely hopeless and impenetrable when discussing a problem.

They're not part of Demon, are they ? They sound equally as duff.

I think I spoke too soon. Over the past few days my connection has been terrible. SpeedTest.net always gives me 9.something meg. But YouTube videos take an age, websites are slow. I thought it might be FireFox bogging down the connection but Chrome is the same. It's actually slower than 2.5mb Sky BB.

That's what I found with my setup wizer. The speedtest shows nearly 5Mb/s but my Netmeter software shows only 600.9Kb/s when the test was running. So which one is right and is there a test that is accurate and consistently reliable .
