A splitter definately the answer if you have a good signal.

I found the Humax pretty good and never had an issue with it but my wife hated it. We had a Topfield before that which seemed to have a much better program guide facility.
Our digital signal deteriorated when they switched from analogue for some reason even though I have the latest High gain ariel and booster. I got pi**ed off with the picture turning into a checkerboard so I got sky in a year ago and we gave both Humax recorders to the kids (If I dump sky - I'm stuffed #-o ) Any way it was a good excuse to get High Def and the F1 coverage

Chas. our humax lets us watch the third program I suppose because I would switch to TV from AV(4), so I suppose that's the answer to my original enquiry and Lons answer, humax needs to be on, unless I split the aerial lead as you suggest.
Yep. Most set top recorders have two tuners so that you can record two different programmes. However if you want to watch another programme at the same time you have to use the tuner in the TV.

An elderly neighbour returned an Hitachi HDR255 to Argos because the signal wouldn't pass through without the recorder being on (they call it aerial loop through in the manual) & got a Bush replacement which does. I know because I had the job of setting them up.

Don't know why I have had to reboot a couple of times the past year, we have had signal changes down here, in fact I have to use channel 800 & 801 for bbc1 & 2 the last couple of months to get a good signal.

Will get a splitter.

"Our digital signal deteriorated when they switched from analogue for some reason"
That's because the analogue channels used to interfere with adjacent digital channels, so they upped the power of the digital transmission to compensate. Once all the analogue channels were turned off they reduced the power of the digital channels.

Not always, as I said before, it depends on whether all three programs are in separate multiplexes or not.
