The other easy way to tell a ripsaw from a crosscut is that ripsaws are much less common!
Every site carpenter needs to cut wood to length but ripping by hand is a bit unusual.
Of my two ripsaws, the one with the darker handle used to be a crosscut but I refiled the teeth. It's not a hugely difficult job if you start with a coarse crosscut and keep the tpi the same.
